The Cedar Falls volunteer club is currently finalizing its meeting location, but members gather regularly on Fridays to make a significant impact in their school community.
Anna Gerdes, a sophomore and the club’s secretary and social media director, shared her thoughts on volunteering, “Volunteering is more than just serving my community; it’s about showing small acts of kindness—like holding the door for someone or greeting a stranger with a simple ‘Good Morning!’ Kindness can go a long way, and it’s essential to recognize that small acts are just as valuable as larger ones.”
In their first three weeks at the new high school, the club held meetings to discuss plans for the upcoming year. Summer Lim, the president, outlined some initiatives. “In our early meetings, we brainstormed our main goals for this year. We’re co-running the environmental club (focusing on recycling), exploring opportunities with House of Hope (October 16 and 17) and participating in projects at Hartman Reserve, like laying wood chips, cleaning trails and maple sap collection. We’re also involved in Trunk or Treat and homecoming decorating, along with side projects like making tie blankets and organizing toy drives for the holiday season.”
The volunteer club thrives on fresh ideas and teamwork, keeping members engaged and organized. Gerdes emphasized the importance of collaboration: “My president, Summer Lim, vice president James Peng and I work together to ensure the club runs smoothly while also having fun.”
Volunteering is vital as it positively impacts communities, fosters personal growth and builds social connections. Regarding the significance of volunteer work, Lim said, “Providing CFHS students the opportunity to show gratitude to the community that has supported them is essential. We want students to learn to give back to those who have helped them grow.”
Gerdes said, “The volunteer club is crucial, not only in our high school but in all schools. It helps build a strong foundation of community service, educating students on how they can make a difference.”
Last year the club had 35 active members; and this year, they currently sit at 30 and are always eager to grow.
Updates are shared in school announcements and on Instagram at @cfhsvolunteerclub, where members post photos from meetings and volunteer events. As the club transitions to the new high school, they look forward to new opportunities to give back and can’t wait to welcome new faces.
