It’s been over a year since Legends Z-A was announced back in February of 2024. Now, in 2025, The Pokemon Company has released numerous trailers and information regarding their new game. In this article we will be covering all, or if not most of the updates The Pokemon Company has released so far. We will also be covering some popular speculations and theories fans have made regarding the information we have received from trailers, The Pokemon Companies website, and much more. So, without further ado, it’s time to jump back into the world of Pokemon!
As of currently, the game has no set release date. The Pokemon Company has stated the game will be released in late 2025. They also recently affirmed that along with the original Nintendo Switch version of the game Pokemon fans can also buy a Nintendo Switch 2 edition with enhanced graphics to further improve your gaming experience. So, although many Pokemon fans were worried about having to buy a whole new console to play Pokemon’s new game, rest assured that you will still be able to play this new game on the original Nintendo Switch.
Regarding the game’s story, Pokemon Legends Z-A will not be taking place in the distant past as previously speculated by fans and in one of our own articles. The game will instead take place in the far future in which your character will explore the vast man-made landscapes of Lumiose City, a city that exists in The Pokemon world that parallels the real world city of Paris, France.
Your character, during a sightseeing visit to Lumiose City, will stay in Hotel Z, touring Lumiose City with your friends while encountering many adventures along the way. Currently, a urban redevelopment plan, led by a corporation by Quasartico Inc, is also taking place in the city. The plan, adding wild areas to the city, will allow your character to catch wild pokemon and allow for Pokemon and people to share the city and live in relative co-existence with one another. Additionally, during your stay in Lumiose you also decide to take part in the Lumiose Royal, a competition in which Pokemon trainers compete with each other to determine who is the strongest, leveling up from rank Z to rank A. If you want to learn more details regarding your new journey in Lumiose, head to The Pokemon Companies website using this link.
Furthermore, while traveling around Lumiose City you will have one of three starter Pokemon by your side. Players can choose from the Pokemon Chikorita, a Pokemon originally from the Gen 2 games in Johto, Totodile, another Pokemon from the Gen 2 games, or finally, Tepig, a Pokemon originally from the Gen 5 games in Unova. Initially, due to a former Pokemon data leak that we again covered in a previous article, the starter Pokemon for this game were theorized to be Froakie, Fennikin, and Chespin, the original starters from the X and Y series. However as shown in its second trailer, this is simply not the case. Due to this new information, many fans have become excited to partner up with past team members from previous, beloved Pokemon games.
Concerning the game’s battle system, from what we’ve seen in the trailers, the Pokemon and their trainers will be able to move around the battlefield. In past Pokemon games, you weren’t quite able to do this. Even in Pokemon Legends Arceus, the first entry in the Legends series, it allowed for your character to move around, however, this didn’t really have any effect in battle as it was more of a cool, additional feature. Now, in the new Legends game, the feature appears to have a significant role in the many battles you will encounter throughout the game.
Now we get to the popular fan theories. Ever since the first trailers have been released, fan theories surrounding the game have exploded. Many theories sprouting from previous game entries, article details, and more. Nonetheless, two interesting details reveal themselves in an extended trailer for Pokemon Legends Z-A with fans raving about what we see in the trailer as they begin to speculate online.
This trailer released by the Pokemon Company back in February of this year shows an extended version of what we saw in the first trailer. The following screenshots have caused fans to speculate a not yet announced game mechanic as well as possibly teasing new evolutions for the pokemon starters.
The first screenshot depicts a player fighting the pokemon Flaaffy. As the player fights the wild pokemon with its partner and the Flaaffy’s hit points reach zero in which the player catches it. Normally in pokemon, when a wild pokemon’s hit points reach zero, they faint, causing the pokemon to be uncatchable. However, this portion of the trailer suggests that you can catch a pokemon that has fainted which has never been done in pokemon before. Although this might be a glitch, or maybe perhaps a recording from an earlier version of the game, if this is true, it could possibly change the way in which pokemon fans catch their favorite pocket monsters.
Next, when we look at the second screenshot, taken from the same portion of the trailer, we get to see the moveset of Chikorita, one of the starter pokemon mentioned before. In its moveset, or what attacks Chikorita can perform, many have pointed out the addition of Disarming Voice, a move that is known to be used by fairy type Pokemon. This proves interesting as Chikorita formerly could not learn this attack. Fans theorize this could possibly indicate a new evolution for Chikorita and the other starters similar to what The Pokemon Company did in Legends Arceus with the starters in that game. In any case fans are excited for Chikorita’s new moveset and what this could possibly mean for the other starters.
And with that, we’ve covered most of the major releases and updates that The Pokemon Company has released about Legends Z-A.
