Robotics club launching into new season of challenges

Every January, the robotics club faces an exciting new challenge—a brand-new game. Each year, the rules, objectives and ways to earn points change, requiring the team to think strategically and creatively. Their mission is to design, build and program a robot capable of mastering that game with accuracy and ease.

To prepare for the competition season, the club meets every Monday from 7 to 8:30. These meetings are filled with collaboration and problem-solving. Members train in programming through Geek Week and learn how to use a variety of tools needed to construct the robot. It’s a process that requires patience and teamwork, but also brings a sense of accomplishment as each piece comes together.

While the club’s main focus is preparing for competition, its impact stretches far beyond that. Members take pride in spreading STEM education to younger audiences. They visit local schools, bringing past robots to show younger students what robotics is all about. These outreach events are filled with curiosity and excitement as younger kids get a firsthand look at how science, technology and creativity come together.

Through these experiences, robotics club members not only develop technical skills but also grow as individuals. “I love seeing the kids grow into great people. Some kids go from the shyest things into leading the group and public speaking with no fear,” coach Julie Kirkpatrick said. “It’s one of the most rewarding experiences.”

For the robotics club, it’s more than just building the robot. It’s about building people—innovators, problem solvers and leaders—one challenge at a time.
