Christmas season leads to annual debate of best, worst songs

As December rolls in and holiday decorations start showing up around school, students are already arguing about one thing: Christmas songs. Whether they spark instant joy or immediate eye-rolling.

For many students, Christmas music is the quickest way to get into the holiday spirit. But now every song earns a spot on their playlists.

Junior Maya Torres said she starts listening to Christmas music the moment the calendar hits November. “Last Christmas by Wham! It’s my favorite,” Torres said. “It always puts me in a good mood. It’s upbeat and it doesn’t get annoying like other songs.”

Other students say the classics still win. “You can’t beat Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee,” junior Noah Price said. “It feels nostalgic, like you’re a little kid again.”

But just as students have strong favorites they have equally strong dislikes.

“All I Want For Christmas Is You drives me crazy,” said senior Brayden Smith. “They play it everywhere, and it just never ends. I swear I hear it ten times a day.”

Others said Jingle Bell Rock by Bobby Helms has been overplayed so much that they switch stations the second it comes on. “It used to be good, said sophomore Isaiah Thompson. “But now it’s like the song haunts me.”

Still, even though the most disliked songs tend to show up during the season whether students want them to or not. Hallways, stores, pep rallies – the music follows.

With winter break right around the corner one thing is clear: students may not agree on which Christmas songs are the best, but they definitely aren’t afraid to share their opinions. And no matter what’s on the playlist, the soundtrack of the season isn’t going anywhere.
