Students weigh in on shows deserving renewal

Conversations about cliffhangers and canceled finales drift every so often through classrooms as students debate which series deserved more time on screen. While new shows premiere every month, some teens say a few older favorites ended too soon and still have stories left to tell.

Sophomore Lily Hernadex has been rewatching Anne with an E, the coming of age drama based on Anne of Green Gables. The series follows Anne Shirley as she adjusts to life in Avonlea while challenging expectations about identity and belonging. “It ends in a way that feels unfinished,” Hernadez said. “There was so much more they could have explored, especially with the characters growing up.”

Others have turned to science fiction. Sophomore Caleb Morgan recently finished Firefly, the short-lived space western that developed a cult following after its cancellation. “It’s crazy that it only had one season,” Morgan said. “The world building was so detailed, and the characters had way more story left.”

For senior Amanda Patel, the comedy My Name Is Early still feels relevant. The show centers on Earl Hickey, a man trying to correct past mistakes after adopting a belief in karma. “They set up this whole idea of him finishing the list, and we never really saw it fully play out,” Patel said. “It would’ve been cool to see how they wrapped it up.”

Though every person watches different genres ranging from historical drama, science fiction, and comedy they all share a common frustration: stories they believe were cut short. Even years after their final episodes aired, these shows continue to spark loyalty from viewers who still hope for one more season.
