For Cedar Falls seniors, the end of the school week isn’t just a break from classes, it’s a reset button. Even if it means rushing to the football field under the Friday night lights or immediately going to bed because you don’t have any more social battery left, how students spend their Friday nights says a lot about what they value after a long week of school and work.

For many, a great Friday revolves around local spots, high school traditions, and hanging out with friends. Senior Isabella Horan’s ideal night centers around game day routines and local hangouts.
“A perfect night for me takes place during football season,” Horan said. “After school I go to Sarah’s with my friends, go home and get ready, get to the stadium and go down to the track for the pictures, do the sidelines and halftime. After, I hang out with my friends and get Cold Stone, then have a sleepover.”

When it comes to local favorites, spots like Reader’s Cup stand out as popular places for students to decompress. Senior Emily West relies on those familiar local places to unwind after working long hours.
“I love to go to the Readers Cup to get a slice of almond coffee cake and a large stormlight lotus,” West said. “Their environment is so welcoming, and they’re really engaging with customers. I’ve never had a bad drink or experience from there.”

While hanging out around town with group chats and plans sounds like the default weekend starter, not everyone wants a crowded room after five straight days of social interaction. Senior Grace Schrage prefers a quieter approach to her evenings, often choosing to grab food like Culver’s and chill on her own.
“I’d rather chill and go shopping after a long week,” Schrage said, noting that her ideal night involves getting homework done early so that she doesn’t have to stress about it later.
In fact, the pressure of schoolwork, jobs, and weekly stress is the biggest common thread among all four seniors. While their actual activities range from playing video games at home to cheering from the track, every student is looking for control over their own time.
For senior Harrison Fromm, a perfect night comes down to having time to relax without sudden plan changes or unexpected stress.
“A perfect Friday night for me would either be by myself or with my friends at a gathering/party planned ahead of time,” Fromm said. “I would prefer to play video games with friends online, or playing by myself. I like to wait until at least Saturday to do my homework, since Fridays are usually more of a break day for myself.”
West felt that same way, emphasizing how much students value simply having a break from constant responsibilities and loud environments.
“A perfect Friday night for me looks like a simple day off work with no homework,” West said. “After a long week, I’d prefer to chill in my own space to clear my head and enjoy the peaceful quiet.”
Whether it’s eating at Sakura, getting drinks at Reader’s Cup, or staying up late online, Friday night in Cedar Falls isn’t about doing one specific thing. For local seniors, it comes down to one common goal. Finally having the freedom to choose how they spend their time.
