Women’s cross country team races toward post season

Varsity runners will be Monica Wessels, Molly Gettman, Holly Schmitz, Amanda Fishel, Cassidy Christopher, Sophie Mallaro and Brenda Sevcik will lead the women’s cross country team into the Metro Meet at Bontrager Park in Waterloo at 4:30 p.m. today.

The team is coming out very strong this season. The hard training that they do each practice is paying off at the meets by getting 20 or more personal bests each meet for the past two weeks.

The cross country team does team bonding and team meals so they can get to know each other better and become one big family. “I love getting to know all of the girls on the team and the team meals,” junior Jamie Becker said.

“This is a very encouraging group, and it has been a joy to see them come together as a team and care about the success of the team,” coach Don Williams said.

Williams said he is excited about watching his girls get faster. The girls get personal record cards when they get a personal record at a meet, and Williams said it is fun for them to earn a personal record card.

One of the team’s goals is to get 2nd in their conference. They also have a long tradition of qualifying for the state competition and being in the top 15 4A schools in the state.

“This is much more than about our win loss record. Knowing that as coaches we are having a positive impact on the future lives of these girls is pretty inspiring. Watching them build character, gain confidence, mature as young adults and learn to enjoy running as a lifetime activity is awesome,” Williams said.

The women’s cross country team has about one month left in its season, with Regional on Oct. 24 and State on Nov. 2.
