All varsity return to golf

The women’s golf team has high hopes as it returns seven out of seven varsity athletes. Even next year, six out of these seven varsity athletes plan to return, which is a great opportunity for these girls to make something special happen.

The youthful experience is paying off as the team is looking very strong early this season.  “The season is looking wonderful. Our top seven on varsity are hitting under 50, which is rare for any school in the state,” junior Miranda Rokes said. “The competition on the team is very high. The past two years the team has been very young, so this year the team wants to win State since we were so close last year. Each day the team continues to strengthen not just on the course, but with the friendships. It is amazing playing golf with some of the girls I grew up learning how to play with.”

Head Coach Megan Youngkent said she is also excited for the season and that this team is exceptional among the many the Tiger coach has worked with over the years. “I have the best of both worlds because I have ultra-talented golfers who are even better people. Success breeds success, so all the good teams that have done well in the past have set tradition for success for my current golfers to carry on,” Youngkent said.

The team has done well these past years, finishing third as a team last year at State and qualifying four individual golfers.

One of those four individual qualifiers was junior Hannah Bermel. Bermel has high hopes for State this year and is excited to be back. “The whole team is really excited for this season. We believe that not only will we make it back to State, but also place higher than last year. It is really exciting to have everyone back and still have a young team. We can’t wait to show everyone what we can do,” Bermel said.

State golf is May 31 and June 1. The women have been putting in the work and are confident in their abilities to show out at State this season. “I think we have potential to do even better at the state tournament this year. We are all really prepared and even more desperate to win,” senior Alex Miller said.

The team has its first meet April 12 in Cedar Rapids. “The work ethic for these girls will pay off for them and teams to come,” Youngkent said.
