Summer training promises athletic growth

As the school year winds down and the weather heats up, athletes of all sports are beginning their summer training.

Summer has always been the time for all athletes to come together and train for the next school year’s season, whether it’s at the high school’s weightlifting program, team practices or a travel team. Over the next three months, athletes will train for the hopes of a successful season, and first up for future senior players Dan Martinson and Dalton Godfrey is football, and it begins in the weightroom.

“For the first part of the summer especially, we’re just trying to get back into football shape and gain some more muscle for the next season,” said Godfrey, who is looking to lead the Tigers defense this upcoming season from the linebacker position.

Martinson added to what the skill position players will be doing this offseason. “We graduated every starting wide receiver this past year, so the position is wide open,” he said. “We run routes with the quarterbacks a couple days a week. We still lift with the whole team. We just do some other things to get ready for the season.”

For the men’s and women’s basketball teams, players are getting ready through team practices and summer teams. “This summer me and a couple of other girls from CF are on an AAU team together,” future senior Ally Conrad said, “plus we have summer practices for the high school.”

On the men’s side of the ball, future junior AJ Green is getting ready for the upcoming season in a big way. “My AAU team is in an Adidas team league, and we travel all over for tournaments throughout the summer, and also we have practice and lifting here at the high school.”

Some of the cities Green is traveling to include Chicago; Spartanburg, S.C.; and Las Vegas.

The volleyball team is returning the most players of any sport next year, and the expectations couldn’t be higher with a strong return of sophomores and juniors, including future junior Grace Burken. “Over the summer we all play club volleyball and have practices and go to team camps,” she said. “We always have a couple scrimmages also just to get ready for the season.”
