Women send six events

As the seasons end comes near, there are still some essential meets left for the girls. This weekend it happens to be the Drake Relays.

This year women’s track qualified in six event with several events barely missing the cut off.

Qualifiers include the following:

  • Shot Put Katie Halterman throwing Friday, 8:30 a.m.
  • Sprint Medley Leah Longnecker, Morgan Sterrett, Auriona Kimbrough, Mackenzie Michael and alternate Nicole Geerdes running Friday, 10:24 a.m.
  • 4×200 Auriona Kimbrough, Leah Longnecker, Paige Kvale, Morgan Sterrett and alternate Jada Golden-Smith running Friday, 12:38 p.m. Finals

  • 4×800 Meg Schmitz, Caroline Ross, Kvale, Michael and alternate Cassidy Christopher running Saturday 9:01 a.m.

Most of the runners for Drake want to run their best and place but are concentrating primarily on the state meet.

Kvale said, “Last year, my goal once we had made it to Drake was to run my best. This year I knew I wanted to back. I knew I would have to work hard to achieve it. Now that I know I am participating, I just want to race and possible get a better time for State.”

Kvale runs the 4×200, 4×800 and 4×400. Her 4×400 relay is currently fifth in the state for all classes when they ended last year at 11th. Last year, she only ran the 4×400, so she said she is very excited to have made it in other events as well.

Another top ranked relay is the sprint medley currently seeded at seventh out of all classes. Lasted year the sprint medley ended seeded 13th.

Sterrett (running a 100 in the medley) said, “My goal is the place top six in the sprint medley. I would also really like to beat East High in the 4×200.”

The 4×200 relay is currently 22nd in the state and aiming to beat East ranked 18th. Last year the relay ended in 9th place, but the time was not so far off from this year, with girls wanting to beat it.

The 4×800 is killing it this year, moving up from last year’s 43rd place to 10th place and qualifying to Drake. This huge accomplishment may be linked to Michael really stepping up this year and helping all of her relays with outstanding split times.

The team is continuing to work hard and prepare to qualify more of the team for State.
