Athlete of the Week: Senior basketball player Anna Sandvold

Senior Anna Sandvold, broke the school record for most three pointers made in a single game with 17 and season record with 62.

For you, what was a highlight of your most recent competition?

I think when we won against a top team Iowa City Liberty, it brought my confidence up and knew that our team can really go far in the postseason.

What makes your sport special and different?

You have to have a lot of team chemistry to win games, so it’s fun to play when you’re really good friends with everyone on the floor.

How long have you been into this sport, and what were the early days of your participation?

I’ve been into basketball my whole life with almost everyone in my family playing it, and I started playing in games since around kindergarten

How did/do you cope with any setbacks/losses you’ve experienced in your sport?

Learning from losses against teams and what I need to work on to have those mistakes that I made in games to not happen again.

Who has been particularly influential in helping your growth in this sport?

My grandpa always used to take me to the gym when I was younger, always takes me to college basketball games, helps me work on my shot and other skills. Also, before and after every game he talks to me and gives me confidence; he tells me what I need to hear, which has helped me grow a ton.

What do you do to prepare yourself before a game?

Before games I always get Jimmy Johns or Pita Pit.

How do you work on improving your skills in this sport?

I love to watch basketball, so watching college basketball helps me learn a lot about situations that happen in my own high school games.

What’s a personal skill that you are targeting lately?

Since teams are starting to close out hard on me on the three-point line, I’ve been starting to add a pump fake and drive, which creates wide open three-point shots for my teammates.

Do you have plans to play this sport after high school?

I do not have any plans yet to play after high school.

What’s the most rewarding thing about your sport?

After you win a game knowing that your hard work and learning paid off.

What has been a highlight for you/your team so far this season?

Our team has really come together toward the end of the season, beating top teams by 30, and it was really fun for our team to beat them in a game record of threes by hitting 17.

As you see it, what are the biggest tests remaining for you/your team yet this season?

We have a challenging road to State coming up with playing against three good teams: Jefferson, Iowa City West and Valley.
