Athlete of the Week: Sophomore Ella Ubben in soccer

Sophomore Ella Ubben is helping lead the team to their 4-0 start.

For you, what was a highlight of your most recent competition?

I scored using my left foot and doing better/using my left foot more is something I have been working on. 

What makes your sport special and different?

There are a lot of people on the field at once, and you have to always be aware of everything around you.

How long have you been into this sport, and what were the early days of your participation? 

I have been playing soccer since I was 3 years old. Soccer has always been one of the main things in my life and something that I have loved since I started.

How did/do you cope with any setbacks/losses you’ve experienced in your sport?

I reflect on the game and things I could have done better or differently so I can be better for the next game.

Who has been particularly influential in helping your growth in this sport?

My parents have always pushed me to do my very best and encouraged me to take every opportunity to play at high levels in order to get better. They also make sacrifices to get me to all my tournaments and practices.

What do you do to prepare yourself before a game?

I always make sure to be in the right mindset and fuel my body with the right foods that will help me perform at my best.

How do you work on improving your skills in this sport?

I practice every day. I stay late after practice and work on things on the weekends and on my own time in order to keep improving.

What’s a personal skill that you are targeting lately?

One thing I have been focusing on lately is taking more shots in games and also working on getting better with my left foot. 

Do you have plans to play this sport after high school?

Yes, it is my goal to play soccer at a high level in college.

What’s the most rewarding thing about your sport?

When you use the skills you’ve been working on in a game to beat a difficult team. 

What has been a highlight for you/your team so far this season?

We have performed very well so far this season. We are undefeated, which is a great start to the season. 

As you see it, what are the biggest tests remaining for you/your team yet this season?

We have some challenging games coming up. Linn-Mar and Waverly will be our biggest games. We have to keep our momentum going to hopefully get to State this year.
