Athlete of the Week: Junior Drake Gelhaus/football

Junior Drake Gelhaus has been the workhorse on offense for this junior pre-dominant team, with over 1,000 rushing yards on the season so far. With playoffs ahead, he will look to keep up the same production and lead his team on a playoff run.

For you, what was a highlight of your most recent competition?

I think my biggest highlight of the last game was helping get the seniors their last regular season win.

What makes your sport special and different?

I love the team aspect football brings and the brotherhood it creates among all of us. It’s also special how the Cedar Falls community has supported our team.

How long have you been into this sport, and what were the early days of your participation? I’ve been carrying a football since I was three years old and really fell in love with the sport as soon as I started playing flag football.

How did/do you cope with any setbacks/losses you’ve experienced in your sport?

I try to look at every setback, whether that’s an injury or loss as an opportunity to grow and get better.

Do you have plans to play this sport after high school?

I’m really trying to focus on my high school football career as of now, but I love the sport and hope to play for years to come.

What has been a highlight for you/your team so far this season?

We’ve had some great players and leaders suffer injuries that robbed many of them of their season, but we’ve come together as a team to create a season to be proud of.

What do you feel you bring to the team?

I’m not the loudest guy on the field, but I try to show leadership through my actions and the effort I put on the field.
