Football team ends season in state quarterfinal game with Valley

After their 27-13 loss against the Des Moines Valley Tiger in the state quarterfinal game on Friday, Nov. 4, the Cedar Falls football season has come to an end.

The Tigers finished the season off with an 8-3 record. The loss to Valley broke a six-game winning streak. It was the team’s first time seeing the quarterfinal round since 2018, and just the second time since 2012.

Senior Cayden Shellhorn said, “The teams bonded together well and connected off the start. We did a good job of making the best out of our situation. The team was fairly small and had a lot of injuries. However, we overcame that and made the most of our situation.”

Regarding the loss to Valley, he said, “I feel like we came into it with a good attitude and mindset. I think they just outsized us by too much.”

Coach Brad Remmert said, “The 2022 football season was a great success. After starting the season 2-2, we won six straight games and made it to the 5A state quarterfinals. I was really proud of how this team kept working to get better and found ways to win close games over quality opponents.”

For next year, he said, “We need to continue to grow as a team. All of our athletes need to commit to the weight room to be able to compete at a very high level in 5A football. The seniors on the 2022 football team led us to the quarterfinals. The effort and dedication of the returning players will determine the success of the 2023 Tiger Football Team.”

There were a lot of 5A MVC division honors starting with first team honors. Drew Campbell, Drew Gerdes, Jake Peters, Drake Gelhaus, Ben Rousell and Hogan Simmer all received their first team honors. Logan Wroe, Ian Bohnenkamp and Ty Kolthoff all received second team honors. Finally, Carter Schlotman, Thyer, Shae Buskhol and Tate Hermansen finish it up earning honorable mentions.
