Holmes Junior High’s annual Pies for Pups fundraiser is in motion, and the earnings are rapidly climbing. Student council president and freshman Emmett Kirchner has contributed to this event and can attest that it should continue.
According to Kirchner, Pies for Pups is a yearly fundraiser for the Cedar Bend Humane Society. Each person at the school has the opportunity to place money in a jar which further corresponds to a teacher of their choosing. The teacher with the most money in their jar will be “pied” in the face. The event started about a week ago.
Kirchner said that the volunteer club is a main contributor to the event, but also that the support of the student council aids in the event’s popularity.
“While the volunteer club is the main group that starts and plans the event, us at the student council are very involved with helping spread the message about this fundraiser throughout the school.”
Kirchner gave a special mention to Finley Bartlett, the president of the volunteer club, in making sure the fundraiser runs smoothly.
“Volunteer club is a huge contributor to this event,” Kirchner said. “Finley Bartlett, the president of volunteer club, played a huge role in getting this event to happen this year.”
Kirchner said that Bartlett and the volunteer club did a great job in ensuring that the fundraiser is successful.
“Finley Bartlett and the volunteer club were the ones who really got this event up and running. Since then, both volunteer club and student council have worked together to make this event the best it can be.”
Kirchner said he likes the idea of the fundraiser, especially the concept of teachers getting pied.
“I think this fundraiser is a great idea. It’s a fun way to make money for a good cause. And who doesn’t want to see teachers get pied in the face?”
In addition, Kirchner said the suspense of waiting for the final teacher to be picked is typically entertaining.
“I think the best part of this event is seeing the close calls between different teachers,” Kirchner said. “It’s always super exciting to not know who is going to win until the very end.”
Kirchner also said it’s his personal wish to see one of the ninth-grade teachers get pied.
“I would love to see one of the ninth-grade teachers get pied. Currently, it is a close race between Mr. Kuker (ninth-grade history) and Mr. Rottinghaus (eighth-grade math).”
In terms of improving the fundraiser, Kirchner said that learning from the past is a great way to make changes.
“I think every year we are able to learn from what we have done previously, and take that into the next year,” Kirchner said. “We are really focused on spreading the word and trying to get the news of this event to as many people as possible.”
Kirchner said he appreciates the cause and the event itself.
“Overall, I think this fundraiser is super fun and a huge success. It is amazing to be able to help with something that people not only enjoy, but also goes to a great cause.”
