AI forcing teachers to rethink instruction

AI is something no one can avoid, including teachers like math and programming teacher Briana Goodenbour at the high school.

“In the future, they (students) will work on debugging the code made by AI,” she said, as the students are becoming more reliant on AI, and she said she even had to rethink some lessons to avoid the use of AI.

She said she believes that AI will continue to write code, and future programmers will focus on decoding it.

As AI becomes more capable, Kenton Engels, a success coach who has worked with many teachers regarding the best approaches for using technology in class, also said he thinks that it will affect students. “They will require a set of skills,” he said. They will “still need humans, but it won’t be as human-dominated.”

He also made a point regarding how students can use AI more as a study tool than something to give answers only. “Teachers/ students were used to gaining info from books when I was in school, but when the internet came, the parents didn’t believe that Google was telling the truth.”  When it comes to AI, teachers run into obstacles because of how fast AI is developing and how it changes the future of jobs.
