Over the weekend of April 5, members of Boy Scout Troop 44 went camping at Backbone State Park, where they spent time fishing, hiking and learning valuable outdoor skills.
The troop departed on the evening of April 4 and arrived late that night, setting up tents before sitting down to a unique dinner.
“Everyone brought an item to share, so we had meat, cheese, vegetables, Lays and many other items,” sophomore Johnathan Burton said.
The scouts started the next day with a light breakfast of mini donuts before heading out to explore the park. Freshman Aiden Neuman recalled a peaceful morning by the water.
“Me and another member, Graham, went out fishing. Unfortunately, we didn’t catch anything, yet it was a fun experience relaxing and fishing,” Neuman said.
After lunch, the group set out on a hike that presented an unexpected challenge.
“Half of us left sooner than the others, and the rest of us went looking for them,” Burton said. “We found three of the five that left, so we kept looking and didn’t find the last two until we got back.”
Once the entire group returned safely, older scouts led a safety talk for the younger members, discussing what to do if lost in the woods.
“We talked about what you’re supposed to do if you are lost and how to make it so you are found — like how you’re not supposed to move if you’re lost,” Neuman said. “They learned a lot and got the rank requirement.”
Despite a few hiccups, Troop 44 made the most of the weekend with plenty of memories, growth and shared experiences.
