Men’s soccer prepares for new season

While most are going to spend their break having fun on vacation or sleeping in, the CFHS men’s soccer team will be getting up early in the morning for an intense practice and then another one later in the afternoon.

“We are looking to improve on our consistency in practice each day,” varsity coach Spencer Steffy said. Steffy is looking to work hard consistently and not let a single player start losing focus.

Since last year’s two starting seniors left, Steffy plans on trying really hard to find their replacements in order to take his team to State. “We will have a very experienced team,” Steffy said.

He emphasized that a team is not a team without a leader stepping up and really bringing voice and reason to the team. “Caleb Iehl is one of our strongest leaders, along with some juniors including Leo Brocka, Chris Keys and Nathan Shull,” Steffy said.

Keys said he thinks he’s ready to accept his leadership roles. “I’m going to try really hard to motivate my team to victory.” He said his also wants his team to succeed and become undefeated; that’s why he will be helping out with motivating his players.

Brocka does not want his team to shy out on talking in games. He plans on really bringing his hype to the team to pump them up before games. “Since we will be seeing some new faces on our team, I will try really hard to get them comfortable and really hyped up to play for us.”

In order to keep improving throughout the years, Steffy wants to make sure his team approaches each practice with a good mindset and “take care of each other, on and off the field,” he said. He said he believes that if his team builds trust within each other, they will have a lot of improvement and success from last year.

With teams all around the state getting ready for the MVC conference, Steffy’s team will play against some very tough teams, including City High, City West and Kennedy. “These teams will definitely be some of the more challenging teams we face, but we will bring all we got and show them what we are made of,” he said.
