An Eye for Images: Junior photographer follows father’s inspiration for creativity

Some people see the world through their eyes. Delaney Tate sees the world through her camera lense.

While many may not realize it, the junior student has a knack for photography.

Using backdrops, lighting, a Canon 6D digital camera and her talent, Tate captures stunning moments through her work and features them on an art Instagram under the screen name of Delaney.t8.

Both of Tate’s parents have provided an immense amount of support to her and her love for photography. Her mother, Beatrice, has acted as a model for her, and her father Thomas has served as a mentor. In fact, a great deal of Delaney’s inspiration stems from her father, who works as a graphic designer, photographer and videographer.

He described the joy that it gave him to see Delaney pursuing her love for photography.

“I’m excited and proud to see Delaney following her passion,” Tate said. “I encourage Delaney by offering her advice and guidance where I can and giving her opportunities to learn, experiment and push herself.”

Ultimately, Tate’s parents continue to encourage her to pursue her passions and embrace her artistic talents. They stand behind the belief that artistic expression should be promoted and embraced.

“Artistic expression is important because it transcends language and culture and gives us a way to connect with one another and share experiences,” Tate’s father said.

Q & A with photographer Delaney Tate

How did you get involved with photography?

I first got involved with photography in my ninth grade technology in art class. For awhile I focused on my drawing and took a break from photography. It wasn’t until my intro to photography class earlier this year that I got back into it, and I’m really glad that I did. My dad also supports and encourages me with my art, and I don’t think I would’ve been interested in it if it weren’t for him.

What inspires you as a photographer?

I am inspired primarily by fashion, fashion photography and surrealism. I draw a lot of inspiration from fashion designer Alexander McQueen and fashion photographer Nick Knight. Their work reflects the kind of art I try to create. I’m also influenced by my dad, and I am so fortunate to have him as a mentor.

What do you love most about photography?

What I love most about photography is being able to work in a controlled environment where I can dictate lighting and set. Also, I love working with models. Using people in my photos gives me the opportunity to work with new people.

What do you find most difficult as a photographer?

What I find most difficult is preparation and models. A majority of the work that goes into the photo is the preparation; setting up the backdrop, lights, camera and dressing the model. There needs to be enough time allotted so you won’t have to rush, and you’ll be able to get the best result. Also, despite how fun it is work with models, I find it difficult to direct people. I often have a clear vision in my mind, and communicating those ideas to a model can be challenging.

Is photography something that you want to take with you later in life?

I definitely plan on keeping photography in my life. I’m considering professional photography as a career.

How has photography impacted you?

Photography has impacted my life in a way that I feel I have purpose. It gives me a reason to challenge myself, reach out to new people and most importantly, to pick myself up when I’m a mess. I’m really grateful I’ve found my calling.
