Swim team finishes 22nd place at state

The swim team finished in 22nd place with 18 points among the 32 teams qualifying for the state meet on Feb 15 in Iowa City.

The 200 yard medley relay team placed 11th with a time of 1.40.91. The winning time was a time of 1.34.75. The relay team included senior Benson Redfern, junior Devin Myhr and Matt Durbin and sophomore Graham Fry. Freshman Drew Langer also swam at State in the 200 free relay.

Cedar Falls also competed in the 50 and 200 yard freestyle, 200 yard IM, 200 free relay and the 100 breast. Going into the meet, Cedar Falls was seeded 14th in the state.

Junior Myhr said the team had a goal of getting on the podium for their relay events, but did not quite make it.

Overall, Myhr said he is proud of his team for how they did. “State was good for the team overall. We all had some really good swims. I’m proud of the whole team for swimming so well,” he said.

Myhr secured his spot for State at the district meet a week before State. “My highlight would probably have to be the week before State at Districts. I dropped 3 seconds from my best time this season and got a spot for State,” Myhr said.

Myhr, who was dropping time all season, said his personal goal at State was to go under one minute in the 100 breast. Although he didn’t achieve this, he is looking at next year already. “For next year I would like to improve my stroke even more. I would also like to do more team bonding activities out of the water to get closer with each other,” he said.

Going into State, junior Matt Durbin and senior Benson Redfern were leading the team. They were both in two relays and two of their own events.

Men’s swim coach Scott Pinter said his goal for State was to drop times. At State, the team had a season best in the 200 free relay with Durbin, Fry, Redfern and Langner with a time of 1.30.17. Durbin also had a season best in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 21.63. Myhr secured a personal best in the 100 breast, with a time of 1.01.4.

Pinter said he is happy with the results of the season but is hungry for more. “I felt good about our performance. I always am left wanting more at the end of the year, and that motivates me to be a better coach moving forward,” he said.
