BSU, also known as Black Student Union, is currently a club at the high school. Daniel Mitchel and Ahmad Madlock started it in the year 2021. It is used to be a safe space for black students (as well as colored) and a way to get things accomplished in a society where discrimination and racism exist. The whole purpose is to bring awareness to the daily struggles and hardships that black students face. Meeting every Wednesday and Friday, they plan to get more work done in the community, such as events that help black students succeed. While Fridays are a kick-back day, they do all their work and planning on Wednesdays.
Filled with future leaders, they use the platform given to them by the school for a good cause. BSU has also participated in the trunk or treat event to help raise money for the food drive. They plan to collaborate with other BSUs from different schools such as UNI to grow and improve individually and as a group.
The group impacts them by bringing new opportunities to each member. The club tries to include every member’s ideas by having a social group from time to time. They do face some challenges though as well as financial issues, so donating money is well appreciated for people who are not in the group but would like to support.
Brenda Koumondji created the logo. The loop at the top shows black unity; black students go through the same experiences, so they stick together. On both sides, the two African continents show where we are from; even though some black people do not know the countries, at least they are all familiar with the continent. The gold color defines melanin as more expensive than gold.
Everybody and anyone are welcome to join, no matter what race, color, or background you come from!
