Staff, students looking ahead to new school

The current Cedar Falls High School has been up since 1954, and the class of 2023 will be the last ones to graduate from the current old building. The first class to graduate from the new high school will be 2024.

The new high school will be located off of West 27 Street, next to the University of Northern Iowa. The current building can hold around 1,200 students, and the new building will be able to hold around 1,400 students and expand rooms if needed. The new school is a $113 million project.

Julie Stoffer, who has been a Cedar Falls teacher for over 20 years, shared her thoughts on the new school. “I am very excited to finally see a new high school. When I interviewed for my job 20 plus years ago, I was told and shown plans for a new high school that was to be built in the next five years. Well, those five years turned into 20. I am looking forward to working in a new building and the opportunities it will bring to my students.”

Sophomore Cooper Wellmann is OK with being the last class to graduate from the current high school building. “My grandfather went to school in this building. My father went to school in this building. My uncles, my brother, all my family went to school in this building and graduated from here. I am the last one. I like knowing that I am also attending the same building they did. It’s a matter of history.”
