Athlete of the Week: Golfer Molly Ratchford

As regionals approach, sophomore Molly Ratchford and the women’s golf team look to build off of their metro win and make a run at regionals. Ratchford has been a major contributor to the team as she is the leader in 9 hole, 18 hole, and combined adjusted average for the tigers.

For you, what was a highlight of your most recent competition?

The highlight of my most recent competition was winning Metro as an individual. After the three combined scores, I was able to pull it through and win individually by 20+ strokes.

How long have you been into this sport, and what were the early days of your participation?

I’ve been playing golf basically since I was born. I always had a club in my hand, as both of my parents are golfers, but I began competitions when I was about 10 years old.

How did/do you cope with any setbacks/losses you’ve experienced in your sport?

I make sure not to worry too much. I know I am going to have bad days and meets that aren’t going to be as good as I want. When this happens, I think about what was my main problem, and I ask for help from either my dad or my coach as to what I can do to improve that problem for the next meet.

Who has been particularly influential in helping your growth in this sport?

A person that has been very influential for my growth of golf is my dad. He is the one who introduced me to the game and taught me just about everything I know. I look up to his golf skills and hope that I can be as good as him before my high school career is over.

What’s a personal skill that you are targeting lately?

A personal skill that I have been targeting lately in terms of golf is my short game—chipping and putting. I wouldn’t consider myself bad at this, but I definitely need improvement. I know that if I want to reach the skill level I desire, that this is where I can do that.

Do you have plans to play this sport after high school?

I don’t have any set plans yet, but my goal is to play Division 1 golf in the state of Iowa. This has been a goal of mine since I was 12 years old.

What’s the most rewarding thing about your sport?

The most rewarding thing about golf is achieving personal improvement. Just from my freshman year to now, I have seen improvement in my game that I never thought was possible. Seeing how much my hard work has paid off gives me the urge and strength to continue my growth so I can reach my full potential.

What has been a highlight for you/your team so far this season?

The highlight for my team so far this season was winning Metro on May 10. It’s given us extra motivation for practice so we can perform well next week at regionals.
