Volleyball team riding high after toppling top-ranked Wahlert

The women’s volleyball team is 21-3 so far this season, following their previous victory against Dubuque Wahlert, and their next game is at home on Oct. 5

Sophomores Annistyn Wedgbury and Brynn Bakula both started last season on varsity, and continued that legacy with two starting positions again this season.

Senior Paige Paup is currently second in the state for kills, with a total of 225. Sophomore Bakula is currently 4th in the state for any grade, for assists, with a total of 423 so far this season.

Wedgbury said, “I would say we are doing really well so far this season. I am proud of how the team works, and how tough we are. We put a lot of effort in during the summer, in the gym and the weight room. It is definitely showing. A highlight for me this season was definitely beating No. 1-ranked Dowling Catholic, which led us to become conference champions.”

Against Wahlert, the Tigers won in three straight sets.

Bakula said, “I would agree that we are definitely doing really well this season. The team bond and atmosphere is great, and it came with a lot of hard work, which was put in over the summer and all throughout the school year so far. A highlight for me this season would be pulling a reverse sweep on Liberty, after losing two straight sets.”

The Tigers’ next games will feature a Quad tournament, which will be at home on Oct. 5. It will start at 6:30 p.m. They are currently ranked 4th in the state as a team, as they head into their next game.

Bakula said, “Coach Johnson talks a lot about getting to the state tournament one step at a time, so our goals for this week and next week are to win our games and be the best team in the MVC conference. After that, we want to make it to State and win.”
