After moving to the United States from Matanzas, Cuba, with her family, sophomore Aymed Marrero-Cabrera observed many cultural differences between the two countries. Although she initially had some difficulty adjusting to life in Iowa, she said that overall her “experience in the United States [has been] the best.”
“At first, it wasn’t very good because of the language and the new cultures, [but] you get used to it,” she said. Marrero-Cabrera also expressed some difficulty in adjusting to the climate, as Cuba typically stays warm year-round.
In particular, Marrero-Cabrera said that she has enjoyed learning at Cedar Falls.
“The truth is that one thing I wanted most was to see the schools here. They are really big and beautiful.”
She also added that “The teachers are super good, as well as the classmates—they help you [with] everything.”
Marrero-Cabrera also added that she enjoyed taking part in new U.S. holidays.
“I like the culture of celebrating Halloween. That’s really fun because in other countries they don’t celebrate.”
Even for holidays that she was familiar with, the American way of celebrating had some unique aspects to appreciate. “I love how they celebrate Christmas,” Marrero-Cabrera said. “It’s really beautiful how they decorate the schools and their houses.”
Although her first language is Spanish, Marrero-Cabrera has been learning English during her time here, and she immersed herself in American culture to better understand the people around her.
“Above all, I love the language, and the people are really nice.”
