Freshmen reflect on their experiences in A Seussified Christmas Carol

The Waterloo Children’s Theater presented a unique twist on the classic A Christmas Carol this year, with a production titled A Seussifed Christmas Carol. The show, which incorporates rhyming and imaginative language, is based on Charles Dickens’ original story but reimagined in the style of Dr. Seuss. Freshmen Caleb Cox and Carsen Hunt shared their experiences and memorable moments from the production process.

Both actors spent weeks rehearsing their lines and preparing for the performance. Cox, in particular, used every free moment to review his lines.

“I spent Tiger Time every day highlighting, reading and memorizing my lines, constantly preparing for rehearsals,” Cox said.

Acting comes with its challenges, and Hunt described one of the difficulties he faced during the production.

“The most challenging part of my character was remembering my lines while doing an action,” Hunt said.

Cox also mentioned a challenge he encountered on stage.

“It was difficult trying to be grumpy and upset at all times, then at the end, switch to being happy and excited,” he said.

In addition to his work on the play, Hunt remained focused on his schoolwork, balancing his responsibilities both on stage and in the classroom.

“In my free time offstage, I go over problems or vocab I learned at school, paying extra attention in class,” Hunt said. “At home, I practice my lines about three times for every scene I’m in.”

Cox recalled a memorable moment from the rehearsal process.

“A memorable moment was the first day of rehearsal because I got to meet the cast and make new friends,” Cox said.

Hunt found inspiration from his previous experiences in theater and from those around him.

“I think what inspires me the most are the people who played main characters in shows I’ve done before,” Hunt said. “They’ve shown me the dedication it takes to truly care for a show. Every time I audition for a different role, I always remember to do my best and not hold back.”
