Students come together with wacky activities to raise money for food bank

Students are raising money for the food bank by participating in new, wacky activities in the Northeastern Iowa Food drive. Events like powder puff volleyball and trunk or treat have become staples of the drive; however, some activities are new to the fundraiser.

Rock, Paper, Scissors Competition

The week of Tuesday, Oct. 7, students competed with each other in a rock, paper, scissors Competition. The idea was pioneered by junior Margaret Martin of the student senate, who was looking for unique ways to raise money for the Food Drive. During this event, students competed for their bead necklaces, which were purchased either at the beginning of the day or during lunch for $1 each. Once each student beat someone,  they received the other’s necklace. Whoever had the most necklaces by the end of the day won the competition. For rock, paper, scissors, sophomore Jasmin Young won the competition and earned a gift card for the Tiger’s Den.

Lip Sync Battle

On Oct. 9, students were able to participate in a lip sync contest. During this round-up of singing obsessed students, five groups signed up for the competition. The winner, and the largest group, ended up winning the competition. Lip singing to the theme song “Ghost-Busters,” the group consisted of students senior Shelby Blake, senior Piper Vanslyke, sophomore Jenna Krantz, sophomore Colbie Bear, senior Reagan Easter, junior Val Nunez, senior Molly Mason, sophomore Lilly Mason, senior Maya Jensen, senior Dayton Jensen, sophomore Pax Lippert and junior Ella Gardner. They were also joined by teachers Brynn Bakula and Melanie Klemz. Erin Gardner, who has helped run the high school food drives for the last 15 years, said she was very happy with the turnout for the lip sync competition this year, noting that at least 60 students attended.

Ultimate Frisbee

Hosted and thought up by junior leadership, students will be able to participate and watch a 3v3 Ultimate Frisbee Tournament. Taking place on Oct. 23-24, students will be able to watch teams play Ultimate Frisbee for $1. Teams also pay $1 to participate in the tournament if they sign up before Oct. 21 on Schoology.

Typically, for the food drive each year, schools around Cedar Falls will combine their efforts in order to raise money for the food drive. However, this year, Gardner said only Holmes will help in the food drive as Peet’s food drive head is unavailable. Furthermore, the elementary schools will also not be coordinating with the high school this year.

“We are aiming for a goal of $12,000.” Gardner said. “It might be a little harder this year because the other schools won’t be participating with us, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t going to try.”
