Fashion Week: Fall/Winter 2015

2015 Autumn/Winter Fashion Week season has been packed with outstanding shows, loud street fashion and an array of inspiring designers. Each new season, designers unleash fresh new trends and concepts for people all over the world to embrace. Some of these trends may be revivals from the past, others formed wholly from new ideas.

Many common threads run through this season’s shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris: rich layers, shearling, retro silhouettes, androgynous glamor and so on. In any case, appreciating these new ideas may require stretching beyond the realms of personal taste. But once you do so, you might be surprised what you fall in love with.

LONDON- Retro Vibe

Roksanda

Serbian designer, Ilincic Roksanda, is known for her bold approach to luxury fashion. Which is why it’s no surprise that she unveiled a collection filled with loose retro silhouettes and gooey prints for London fashion week. The collection consisted largely of pant suits and billowing outerwear in rich colors. Many other designers also chose to use oversized outerwear, bell bottoms, high neck lines, chunky accessories and triangular color schemes this season, creating a full on 70’s revival.

Roksanda is commended for designing pieces that are modest, but also cutting edge.

“We are living in an age when it’s important to stand out in an elegant way- not too loudly or showing too much flesh.”

New York- Hood by Air

Hood By Air (HBA), a fashion label launched in 2006, simply started out as a line of graphic t-shirts featuring the word “hood”. Since then, designer Shayne Oliver has worked tirelessly with the rest of the HBA team to elevate the company to its current standing as a leading brand in urban wear.

HBA stood out at New York Fashion Week for a few simple reasons. First, it’s androgynous modeling was created not only through design, but through mesh head pieces, compressing models’ facial features and adding false ones. The experimental styling did not stop there; gold padlocks hung from custom grills generating a strong urban tone. However, what truly sets HBA apart from other shows at New York fashion week is the unique energy the collection encapsulated. Oliver’s designs do not belong in any one category, but blend the best aspects of many. Skater, hip hop, art, high fashion- all these aesthetics exist inside one collection.

“I’m always trying to figure out how to translate something into a distorted version of itself, and blur the lines of what it actually is” -Shayne Oliver

Paris- Hermès

During Paris fashion week, Hermès unveiled their long awaited collection at Paris fashion week under new creative director, Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski. People all across the globe have been waiting since last fall- when Vanhee-Cybulski accepted the position to see what her debut collection would be. Hermès fans were not disappointed. The traditional fine leather and equestrian aesthetic of Hermès was surged with fresh energy. To achieve this, Vanhee-Cybulski mixed textures, incorporated rich colors, used crisp lines and raised necklines. In fact, many other labels chose to revive high necklines and thick collars this season as well.
