1. Prep. Whenever I try to explain how to do makeup it’s fund to compare it to building a house.  Just like with a house, you need to have a good piece of land to build your house on, this is what prepping your face does for makeup.  Everyone has different types of skin and treats their skin differently.  Avoid using new products as you don’t know how your skin will react and you don’t need an allergic reaction for the big day.  Remember to exfoliate, as this can be one of the most important things to do so your skin will glow as it will remove dead skin cells and allow a smooth canvas to work with.  Think of this as leveling the ground so your foundation can be secure.

2. Primer. There are tons different types of primers for all types of skin.  Finding the primer the is perfect for your skin type is the challenge  The purpose of primer is to put a barrier between your skin and the makeup, and also so that the makeup applies smoothly.  If you get the right primer for your skin type it should help your makeup last longer and look flawless throughout whole day.  But if you get the wrong king for the skin you have, it won’t work.  If you have dry skin and you get primer for oily skin, it will only emphasize your dry skin.

3.  Foundation. can range in different prices, skin types, and level of coverage.  It is up to you to find the coverage right for you.  Now it is easy to get carried away with full coverage foundation, especially for big events such as prom.  Focusing on your skin type is a better option especially because you are going to be able to cover up all of you imperfections.  Full coverage foundations can also look “cakey” is they are applied incorrectly.  Foundation come in three major forms:  powder, cream and liquid.  You can apply these with a sponge, brush or with your fingers.  When you look for  a foundation, make sure to match your skin tone, match on your neck and not on your hands as they can often be darker.

4.Concealer. This is what can make the difference between light natural makeup and full face glam.  A foundation main job is to even out your skin tone, while concealers are what cover imperfections in the skin.  Concealers can also be used to highlight and contour the skin to give you a more sculptured look.  Finding what your want in a concealer before you try it is important.  If you know you want a more natural finish, go with a concealer that has a lighter coverage or you can just use foundation and apply it as concealer.  Cream concealer is what is going to give you the best coverage as for a full coverage goes.  If you have problems this will be able to cover up pretty much everything. Generally you get what you pay for with foundation, the more money you spend the better coverage you will receive.

5. Contour and Highlights. Against popular belief, contouring and highlighting does not completely change the appearance of someone’s face if it’s done correctly. Yes there are ways to change your face shape but the real reason people use contour and highlight is to emphasize the features that are already there. When using contour and highlight never go more than two shades from your skin tone up or down. You can use concealer or foundation and even bronzer works. Make sure to find what ways would look good on your individual face shape and practice a few times before actually wearing it out.
