Tigers earn first ever state golf title on Saturday

Cedar Falls captured its first ever men’s golf state championship on Saturday, Oct. 9 at Beaver Hills Country Club in Cedar Falls after defeating Pleasant Valley by 18 strokes. The Tigers, led by junior Owen Sawyer, jumped to an 11 stroke lead on Friday before shooting a +13 as a team on Saturday to claim the title at +20. 

Sawyer finished -2, which was good for third place overall. Player of the Year junior Maxwell Tjoa finished fourth with an even score. Junior Jack Beecher was the third golfer for Cedar Falls after closing out his weekend +8 and 11th overall. 

Senior Sam Jermier rounded out the top four for Cedar Falls with his 26th overall finish after shooting +14. The Tigers final two golfers, junior J.J. Nelson and freshman Anthony Galvin, finished 35th and 41st after shooting +16 and +18. Cedar Falls has high hopes heading into next season when they return five of their six state golfers, including Sawyer, Tjoa, Beecher and Nelson.
