English teachers attend conference

On Oct. 13 and 14 the whole English department went to the Iowa Council Teachers of English conference in Johnston. This was a two day event for teachers to learn from each other, including listening to a keynote speaker, Cornelius Minor who is an author who wrote many books about education for teachers, school leaders and community leaders.

English teacher Brenna Griffin is also the chair of the committee that planned the conference. She has one year left until she mentors the next chair. Griffin said she remembers Minor talking about mental traps that teachers can fall into, as well as how teachers can adjust their mindsets in teaching students what they should know.

English teacher Courtney Lubs said she also appreciated Minor talking about meeting students where they are and being present in society. His general theme was about the big picture ideas, getting teachers to help students find their passions and follow them.
