Prom’s Closet offering affordable dresses, accessories this weekend

With spring approaching, there is one overall dominant thought in girls’ minds … prom apparel. While prom can cost be expensive, on Feb. 24 and 25, a charitable group called the Junior League of Waterloo-Cedar Falls will be hosting the annual “Prom’s Closet” at Crossroads Mall in Waterloo.

Prom’s Closet sells all things from dresses to accessories to shoes. The Junior League is a non profit organization focused solely on being an educational and charitable committee. Composed of all women, it pushes for voluntarism and helping the community through the committed volunteers and action steps they put together. In fact, they are still seeking dress donations at their office at 2530 University Avenue in Waterloo.

Co-chair of the committee Heather Cue said, “The Prom’s Closet event collects donated prom and formal dresses and gets them to young women in our community and surrounding communities for only $10. We also collect shoes and accessories and provide them for $1-3 each. All of the money collected goes back into our community through philanthropy put on by the Junior League. This is a wonderful event that benefits young women from over 40 schools. Many of these young women could not afford a dress or to even go to prom without the help of Prom’s Closet, and we are so happy to be able to help.”

Cue said they have sizes ranging from 0 to 26, short and long dresses, simple and elaborate, and a variety that can be used for various events, such as prom, formals, homecoming dances and even as costumes for plays, musicals or themed events.

She said this is the seventh annual Prom’s Closet event hosted by the Junior League of Waterloo-Cedar Falls. “Our focus is on helping teens in our community through various philanthropic events. We love being able to put on such an amazing event that notably impacts young women’s lives for the better,” she said.

This year’s Prom’s Closet will be held at the Crossroads Mall (lower level) on Friday, Feb. 24 from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 25 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. It is cash only.

“Bring your friends and prepare to have fun shopping for your perfect dress,” Cue said.
