Peet GSA meeting Mondays during Tiger Time

GSAs, or Gender and Sexuality Alliances, are an important tool for LGBTQ+ students and allies to gather with one another and connect.

“I know it’s an important thing for people and my favorite part is having a place to be you, no judgment; you can just be there,” said freshman Jay Taylor, who is on the leadership team and joined GSA for the first time this year.

The GSA at Peet Junior High is offered as a Tiger Time enrichment and meets every Monday in adviser Shantel Kahrs’ room. Students can either sign up month by month or for the entire year. Meetings are centered around specific topics each month; for example, this month’s theme is gratitude.

Students also have the opportunity to join the leadership team, which helps plan meetings and keep things on track.

Freshman Ruthie Haynes, who has been a part of GSA since seventh grade and is also on the leadership team this year, said, “I wanted to join the leadership team because I think it’s a really important resource for people at the school.”

GSAs also offer a safe place for students to meet with one another. “My favorite part is getting to socialize with people,” Haynes said.

“Being in GSA gives me a space to partake in school as a trans person without having to hide who I am,” Taylor said.
